First of all assess your own strengths and weaknesses. You will find it helpful to enlist friends and family for this step as they may have ideas and opinions that you have not thought of. Think about what sort of roles would best suit you whilst also giving you the opportunity of developing your career over time.

JobCentrePlus also offers a personal advisor or a specialist advisor to assist you with your career choice and job hunting activities.

Training

Once you have decided on your career direction it might be helpful to gain formal training and qualifications to support this. Once in employment many employers will encourage professional development, if you are yet to pin down that ideal job then your local job centre will be able to assist with training with a view to gaining employment.

It is also possible to set up a work trial with an employer where you have up to 15 days to show your capabilities and also for you to assess the employer and whether they are right for you.

Volunteering

Voluntary work is another way of learning new skills and gaining valuable experience to prove your abilities to a potential employer.
